Could you pitch yourself for the perfect job in less than six seconds? According to a study recently released by TheLadders, that’s all the time most resume have to make an impression.
Earlier this year, researchers embarked on a 10-week observation of a team of recruiters’ eye movements. The data collected analyzed where and how long recruiters focused when digesting a piece of information or completing a task.
The study found that on average, recruiters spent about 6 seconds on their initial “fit/no fit” decision. Recruiters followed consistent visual paths while reviewing resumes.
About 80% of review time was spent on six data points: name, current title and company, previous title and company, previous position start and end dates, current position start and end dates, and education. Researchers observed that making the most of the remaining time depended heavily on a resume’s layout and organization.
Would your resume pass a six-second review?
