Resume Fail: Font

We can't.

Here at CC Resume Consulting, we're all about the details. So when we heard this piece on NPR about choosing the right resume font this week, we knew we had to share it with you all.

While we disagree with NPR's take on using an Emoji to brand yourself, we can both agree that using Comic Sans on a resume is in poor taste.

Our advice? Keep it simple and polished. Let your skills and accomplishments do the talking, not your font choice.

From duties to accomplishments

One of the most common misconceptions we hear is that a resume’s primary purpose is outlining the duties of your current and previous employment.

An experienced hiring manager will understand the responsibilities associated with a given title.

An effective resume should shy away from only outlining responsibilities.  It should profile your accomplishments and set you up for your next success: landing a great new job.

Interview Skills: Dress the Part

Our consultants are recruiters by trade and one of the most common questions job candidates ask is about the dress code for in-person interviews. Our advice is simple: it's better to overdress than to under-dress.

Don't take our word for it? This info-graphic from hiring software SmartRecuiters puts it all in perspective: "65% of bosses said clothes could be the deciding factor between two similar candidates."

Getting Laid Off

Uh, so now what do I do?
Getting laid off can throw a wrench in your job hunt if too much time passes between your the lay off and finding your next job.

Business Insider tackled the subject of how to address a layoff on your resume in a recent article, and made some astute observations. Among the best recommendations, was to be honest. Resist the urge to fib and list your last position as "present". It's not worth it, people!

Are you struggling with editing your resume post-layoff?  CC Resume Consulting can help.  Our consultants offer one-on-one fact-finding sessions to ensure your resume is optimized to get you in the door of your next employer. Contact us today.

Social Strategy: The Surprising Impact

Source: Mashable
Pop Quiz: How do you find a job and increase your chances of staying employed longer longer?

Answer: Up your game on social networks like LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook! The number of companies using social media to recruit has been steadily increasing throughout the past six years.

Jobvite recently released a study highlighting the surprising impact social recruiting has on the professionals it finds.  "Jobvite found that companies who used social recruiting enjoyed improved candidate quality and quantity, which is why 94% of the businesses surveyed use or plan to begin using social recruiting in 2013. As shown in the infographic below, almost half of the social recruiting hires remained in their positions for over three years."

One of the first things we cover with our coaching clients is the quality of their LinkedIn profile. Interested in the best way to do that? Contact us for a free consultation.
